HGTV Design Star: Real People, Real Kitchens

The Challenge: Contestants must transform the kitchens and dining rooms in two neighboring home within three days, from start to finish, which involves renovating flooring, cabinet hardware, back splashes, and more.  The houses are similar in look and structure.  The teams are Anne, Brooks, and Abbey vs. Boris, Jeribai, and Tiffany.
Remaining Contestants

INTRO MUSIC MAKING ME DANCE!

I immediately think that Anne, Brooks, and Abbey have the advantage, I mean, they've shown how good they can be.  These teams have 3 days to finish, with 2 handymen to help them.

Meet With Clients
Couple with 3 Kids
The family is "transitional", Boris goes crazy again.  He's full on creep early on.  Jeribai focus' on the tile he wants to put up.

Foster Family
Sweet kids right away.  The couple explains what they like, with Anne and Brooks asking most of the questions.  They want modern with warmth, not too traditional or contemporary.   They want seating on the inside of the bar and a potential herb garden.

First Steps
Anne always thinks everything is her expertise, perhaps the show should already be hers!  Brooks wants to paint the exposed wood beams ceiling to make the room look bigger.  Brooks doesn't like the whole cream color, all over.  He's making his voice heard about the color palette.  Anne is bossy, again!  I can't see her as the HGTV Design Star because she is too bossy, even with all that talent.  Brooks is going to make a countertop that is unusual.

Boris wants get rid of the cabinet that the homeowners hate and put in a floor to ceiling wine rack.  Sounds cool, functional.  They're going to get rid of the wood paneling and Jeribai wants wallpaper with texture.  Tiffany thinks the back splash is risky, but Jeribai is going for it.

Both teams are going to town on destroying the kitchen. Isn't that the best part?

Day 2
The homeowners picked a camel color cabinet, so Boris and Jeribai select a back splash.  The kitchen floors were put in over night, it's amazing how much that does for the room already.  The team goes furniture shopping.  Anne finds a farmhouse table and looks awesome!  I could see myself eating around that table.  It has a bench that goes with it, which I love.  Brooks gets a large stainless sink with an apron front.  No idea they had so many features.  Brooks," I've never tried the tope on tope color scheme."  He hates the beige in the kitchen, I'm glad that he is voicing his opinion, but not in a negative way.

Abbey is worried she wont' have much of a choice, so she decides she's going to take control of the back splash and the countertops.  Abbey is super personal and warm, I hope she does ok.  Tiffany finds a dining room table, it has a hammered metal top.  Jeribai doesn't like it because of the finger prints that will get on it.  Jeribai is going to town on the wall, prepping it for the back splash.

Day 3
The carpenters have installed all of the cabinetry, Tiffany is going to work on her light fixtures in the dining room, while Jeribai is going to start putting up his back splash.  This back splash looks so hard to put in.  I don't think I could ever do this, I'll just hire Jeribai.  Tiffany thinks Jeribai is doing too much work with this back splash.  Boris' wallpaper is looking really good, his shelving, not so much.  Jeribai finished the back splash, the team loves it.  Final push.
Beige on Beige

The hardware was installed in their kitchen as well, but this team have the carpenter put in the back splash.  Abbey is going to work making the drapes, which the team loves.  Busy ants in this household, lots of stuff going on at the same time.  Brooks countertop has arrived, he thinks it's brilliant.  Glade and Command product placement.

Can we have some Volvo product placement with a funky beat?  That can only mean one thing, David Bromstad has arrived!  It's camera challenge time.  He says that Brooks' teams room is "very beige."  I think Brooks has done a really good job of letting his voice be heard while not putting down his teammates.  Old Tylor could use some of these tips!  For the Jeribai team, he warns Jeribai about the back splash, he says nobody has finished back splash in previous seasons.
Brooks' Countertop

Camera Challenges- Tips on flooring, hardware, or back splashes
Anne-  She does a pretty good job, and I like her tip.  "knobs on doors, pulls on drawers"
Brooks- He seems to remain a little more calm, and his tip is helpful as well.  I think I could use his tip.
Abbey- She's a little all over the place, and I can't use that tip.  Sorry Abbey!
Tiffany- "Jewelry on an outfit" describing hardware.  I think hers was better too.
Boris- Creepy smile.  I like his flooring tip though, don't get flooring that will feel dated in the future.
Jeribai-  Oh boy, he blew it big time, and he knew it.  Rambling on, but I see where he was going with it.  "God, Bomb!"  Bromstad, "Don't ever end in a defeat."  Wise words, Sir.

If these camera challenges were what they were judged on the most, Brooks would of been gone a long time ago.  It's good to practice and try to improve each time.  Anne has always been pretty strong, but I do see some progress with Brooks.  Jeribai needs to pull it together, he has too much talent to mess up here.
Jeribai's Back Splash

Evaluations
Jeribai, Boris, Tiffany-  Positive: wall paper, warm kitchen, back splash completion  Negative: Table, Pendant lighting, corner shelving

Brooks, Anne, Abbey- Positive: Color palet, dining table/mixed wood, painted ceiling, drapes, sink Negative: Plastic trough planter, boring colors in kitchen, Brooks countertop

Meeting with Judges
Abbey's camera challenge: They like her unpredictable nature, didn't know what she was getting at.
Anne's Camera Challenge: Has a real ease, missed the wiseness of her challenge
Family Reaction: They loved their kitchen, table was mentioned.  They thought it was so pretty!
Judges: Anne admits to taking the lead, they thought this neutral was dead-on, white ceilings were mentioned, the drapes were praised.  The herb garden, Abbey's, was dissed, because it made it look cheap.  They loved the sink, but they hated the countertop, but Brooks defended it.  The back splash and counter tops were criticized, another Abbey choice.

Tiffany camera challenge: Loved the intro, jewelry analogy, they want to be her friend.
Jeribai camera challenge:  They encouraged him to own his mistakes.
Family Reaction: Wife starts crying, they're blown away.
Judges: They loved Boris' wall paper, and I loved it too.  The table was criticized (Jeribai warned you!).  The pendants were criticized, the two were in no man's land.  They loved the back splash.  Two weeks in a row that Jeribai has been told he's done something, "the best it's ever been done on Design Star."  He is starting to stand out.  Boris' shelving was dissed, not enough room to fit the wine bottles.

Judges' Discussion: They have to nitpick because everyone is so good.  They love Anne's dining room and Jeribai's tile and installation.  Boris' wallpaper was praised, but the shelves were not.  Ms. Soto said she is "pretty sure she's gotten a pap smear on that table before", referencing Tiffany's table selection.  Brooks' countertop was talked about, bland bland Abbey bland.

The Results
 Winner winner chicken dinner: Anne
On the hot seat: Tiffany
Going home: Abbey

-I'm sorry to see Abbey go, but she is too all over the place.  She didn't really progress.
-Anne has worked her way up to the top spot I believe.  She started off rough, but we're seeing her style come through.
